Chough pre-alpha

Android · your own server

A music library you actually own.

Chough keeps your music as files on your own server — tagged, with cover art and synced lyrics — and plays it like a proper music app. No catalogue, no recommendations, nobody else's library mixed into yours.

What it is

Three things, and deliberately not much else.

Yours, not a service's

Every track is a file in your own storage. There is no shared catalogue and nothing crosses between accounts — your library is only ever yours.

A player, not a file browser

Songs first. Playlists, artists, favourites, a real queue, synced lyrics, offline downloads, and native controls on the lock screen.

Added from your phone

Adding music happens on your own device, from public sources you point it at. The server stores what you send it and nothing else.

Installing

Four steps, once.

  1. 01

    Download the APK

The button above. It is a direct download — about 62 MB.

  2. 02

    Let Android install it

Android will warn that your browser is trying to install an unknown app. Allow it for that one install; you can switch the permission back off afterwards.

  3. 03

Sign in, or create an account

Open Chough and sign in. There is no server address to type — the app knows where to find its library.

  4. 04

Updates come from inside the app

Settings → App version → Check for updates downloads and installs the newest build. You do not need to come back to this page.

arm64 phones, Android 8.0 or newer. Older 32-bit devices are not supported.
This build is debug-signed. If you have ever installed Chough from anywhere else, Android will refuse to install over it — uninstall the old copy first. Doing that erases the app's local data, including offline downloads.
Pre-alpha, shared with a handful of people. Expect rough edges, and don't keep anything here that you can't afford to lose.
